A long corridor led to a bare, harshly lit institutional space with exposed electrical trunking, grey carpeting, an MDF bench, a table displaying three etched plates, and two speakers. From these came the hushed sound of hands brushing together – palm-to-palm – a form of applause devised by prisoners on Robben Island to express their secret appreciation for the contestants in their silent ballroom dancing competitions. The ‘brush’ of the title, in this quiet work, not only expresses the artist’s own profound appreciation of the prisoners’ act of resistance but, like the work itself, also attests to the potential for a political aesthetic, an art of resistance.
