Untitled (Still Small Voice), no date
On The Art Institute of Chicago’s ground floor, a few meters below Georges Seurat’s Un Dimanche à la Grande Jatte (1884-1886), I saw a small piece of paper lying in a glass case among drawings and assemblages, part of the last section of James Castle’s retrospective (10/10/2009 - 03/01/2010). I had never heard of this artist, deaf and dumb from birth. The piece felt like a dazzling flash of lightning followed by endless, silent thunder.

Untitled (Still Small Voice), no date
Au rez-de-chaussée de l’Art Institute de Chicago, à quelques mètres en dessous du Dimanche à la Grande Jatte (1884-1886) de Georges Seurat, j’ai vu ce petit bout de papier. Il était posé dans une vitrine, entre des dessins et quelques assemblages, au fond de la rétrospective James Castle (10/10/2009 - 03/01/2010), un artiste né sourd et muet dont je n’avais jamais entendu parler. Ce fut comme un éblouissement, un éclair suivi d’un interminable tonnerre de silence.
