Les contes de fées ne durent jamais longtemps, 1985-1990
Patrick van Caeckenbergh sets up an alternative reality, rendered tangible by his fantasist archeology of DIY memorabilia. With Les contes de fées ne durent jamais longtemps (‘fairy tales never last’), he remakes the witch’s gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretel and then leaves it to rot. The cabin is now infected with a ludicrous moldy rash: no longer tempting or terrorising, at best it’s morbidly fascinating. This fairy tale memento mori is an oddity in Caeckenbergh’s production. Usually concerned with the materialization of his fanciful inner world, the artist-inventor indulges here in a cathartic disclosure. His crumbling shack sparkles with jubilant cynicism.

Les contes de fées ne durent jamais longtemps, 1985-1990
Patrick Van Caeckenbergh est un archéologue de l’imaginaire, un bricoleur de souvenirs. Pour Les contes de fées ne durent jamais longtemps, il réinvente la maison en pain d’épices de l’ogresse d’Hansel et Gretel, puis la laisse se décomposer. La cabane, autrefois si tentante, est maintenant tapissée de moisissures grotesques. Elle n’inspire plus ni les papilles, ni la terreur, tout au mieux une fascination légèrement morbide. Ce memento mori de conte de fées a une place toute particulière dans l’œuvre de Caeckenbergh. D’ordinaire affairé à la mise en scène d’un univers fantasque, l’artiste-inventeur fait ici tomber les voiles. Sa bicoque pourrissante est une petite étincelle de cynisme jubilatoire.
